Here, using large language models (LLMs) trained on biological diversity at scale, we demonstrate the first successful precision editing of the human genome with a programmable gene editor designed with AI. To achieve this goal, we curated a dataset of over one million CRISPR operons through systematic mining of 26 terabases of assembled genomes and meta-genomes. We demonstrate the capacity of our models by generating 4.8x the number of protein clusters across CRISPR-Cas families found in nature and tailoring single-guide RNA sequences for Cas9-like effector proteins.

Study Abroad

In addition to shifting the conversation, we’ve worked to get feedback from the public and the security community. Last summer, we held a “red pen” session at the annual hacker conference DEF CON in Las Vegas where we asked participants to mark up our draft Secure by Design white paper and provide feedback. And throughout the last 12 months, we’ve hit the road, speaking at various conferences and events, including South by Southwest, to take our message mainstream.

Pursue a Graphic Design or Communications Degree

These are just a few examples of what communication design professionals can produce. In essence, their goal is to create a visually attractive and compelling image that conveys an important message. That message might be to buy from a certain brand, donate money to a worthy cause or access public services in a certain area. Due to the versatility of design and visual communications, this skill is applicable across sectors and industries.

Communication Design vs. Visual Communication vs. Graphic Design: What’s the Difference?

Specific requirements and additional information are available at roski.usc.edu/undergrad or email A minimum grade of C (2.0) or higher is required in all studio and art history courses for all undergraduate majors and minors in the Roski School of Art and Design. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained by all candidates for the Master of Fine Arts in Art, Master of Fine Arts in Design and Master of Arts. When you're ready to take the next step in your graphic design career, apply to the Advanced Design Communication Arts certificate program, where you’ll dive deeper into special design topics and further refine your skills with master-level mentorship. The senior year comprises an involved set of classes dedicated to helping students hone conceptual and design skills and preparing a final competitive portfolio.

Digital Marketing

Creating interactive prototypes and incorporating animation adds depth to digital designs. Tools like Figma, InVision, or After Effects enable communication designers to showcase interactive concepts and bring static designs to life. Students seeking to transfer from other colleges and programs at UC must be in good standing to be considered for admission.

Communication Design career opportunities include the design of advertisements, exhibitions, publications, corporate communication, packaging, posters, websites, branding systems, books, signs, magazines, environmental designs, and video messages. They may be identified as communications designers, visual designers or graphic designers; and they may work in art direction and design consultation. Students may find employment with a private or public organization or a design agency. If someone says they are a communication designer, you will immediately understand that means they are creating strategic visuals that express a specific message.

Roski majors may take advantage of art courses offered through study abroad programs. For more information, see Roski’s study abroad page at roski.usc.edu/academic/study-abroad. Applications for admission to the graduate programs are evaluated by the USC Office of Graduate Admission before being forwarded to the school. Students must be admitted by both the USC Graduate School and the Roski School of Art and Design. The sophomore year introduces basic communication design skills, such as typography, color theory, image-making, design thinking, software proficiency, and creative methodologies for problem-solving. When admitted to UNT, an entering student interested in an undergraduate degree in Communication Design is classified first as a "pre-major" for the Communication Design program.

We continue to see a steady increase in the number of people who rely on their smartphones as part of their everyday lives, whether it’s for social connection, news, shopping, or work. Technology isn’t going anywhere, so it’s important that mobile web and app design continues to evolve. Mobile app designers may be hired by a company to create and manage their app, or they may create their own products and sell them through their own company. This demands a high level of creativity to create something truly unique and eye-catching, all while ensuring the entire message of the campaign isn’t lost.

Designers often work for design firms, internal design teams, or as independent freelancers. Today's designers may be found working in the healthcare system or for governments and NGOs impacting society. Established designers may create their own firms or pursue entrepreneurial activities. Regardless of their career, almost every designer works on behalf of an interested party (or client) and an audience, identifying specific problems and helping fulfill the needs of both groups. Communication design is specifically used when discussing the strategy involved in expressing information through visual design.

This involves organizing design elements in a clear and straightforward manner, utilizing typography, layout, and visual hierarchy to guide the viewer’s attention and comprehension. The goal is to minimize ambiguity and facilitate a seamless understanding of the communicated information. Content designers craft visual and written content aligned with a brand’s communication strategy. This role involves creating compelling narratives through a combination of visuals and text, collaborating closely with writers and marketing teams. High school applicants who submit a complete application by the December 1 Early Action deadline will be pooled and reviewed for selection.

Proficiency in UI design tools is crucial for creating visually appealing and user-friendly digital interfaces. Tools like Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD enable designers to craft effective and engaging user experiences. Students focusing on interaction or motion design are prepared to work in a variety of capacities. They are most likely to work for digital design firms to develop structural and functional information architecture for interactive and immersive environments. People who are successful in communication design tend to have visual and kinesthetic/tactile learning styles.

This special edition pairs Ray Bradbury’s 1951 book with imaginative illustrations that capture the essence of each narrative, bringing dimension to the classic science-fiction novel. The book features eighteen tipped-in ink block illustrations and a dust jacket visualizing elements of the collective stories. Also included are a poster-scale reproduction of a letterpress-printed ink block, original ink-block prints, a collection of woodblock stamps representing the stories and other commemorative artifacts. Booklet spreads for Iris Van Herpen, a Dutch fashion designer known for fusing technology with traditional haute couture craftsmanship. Photojournalists will first carefully research the event or social issue, and then identify promising subjects to photograph.

Some designers chose humor, like when Schick created a series of men sporting literal ‘beastly’ beards of animals to encourage men to shave. Or they can be weird yet practical, like when Ikea designed an ad for a new crib that also doubled as a pregnancy test. Or they can be inspirational, like when Shanghai General Motors created a campaign raising awareness for car safety by using real accident victims to get the earnestness of the message across. The communication design definition, put more simply, would be utilizing visuals that strategically express information. As technological advancements open the graphic design industry up to change, design becomes even more prevalent in our world.
